Get your content noticed!
For years we have been talking about "content being king” when it comes to creating a website that is easy to find and engaging for visitors. However, most content does not gain any traction according to a recent study done by Moz and BuzzSumo of more than 1 million web articles across different industries. They found in a randomly selected sample of 100,000, posts over 50% had 2 or less Facebook interactions (shares, likes or comments), and over 75% had zero external links.
HELP! My Website's Been Hacked!
We spend a good deal of time talking websites with business owners across a wide spectrum of industries. When it comes to website security, comments we hear on a daily basis include: I don’t take payments on my website, therefore, I am not at risk of being hacked. I don’t care if my site gets hacked; there is nothing anyone would want there anyway. And the most common: Why would anyone want to hack my site?
In the good-old-days a website hack was merely a nuisance. A hacker would gain access to the site files, upload a page or content with sometimes embarrassing content and let the world know your site had been hacked. These hacks could also be destructive, but most were harmless, requiring a ...
Using Videos in Marketing: Why and How to Create a Video that gets Noticed.
Videos are a great way to introduce your products and services in a visual way. With the introduction of low cost HD video cameras (including video cameras on our smartphones) more and more businesses are choosing to market with videos and there are good reasons why.

•    Video drives higher engagement and longer retention.  You only have about 8 seconds to capture your audience’s attention. 65% of viewers watch more than three quarters of each video, meaning you keep them engaged longer than text only pages.
•    Video is the winning medium in driving conversions. 70% of marketers say video is the most effective means to driving conversion. Product videos can in...
Dealing With Unhappy Customers
If you have been in business for any length of time, it is likely that you have at least 1 customer transaction that was less than perfect. A bad review across online channels today can potentially cause a lot of harm.
While the natural reaction may be to fight back, that could make a bad situation worse.
In recent news, a restaurant owner in Maine got national attention when she loudly chastised a toddler and her parents because the toddler was crying during the meal. The incident became national news when the toddler’s mother took to social media to file her complaint. With supporters on both sides of the issue (should yo...
Dealing with Plagiarism
We have written blog posts and weekly marketing messages talking about the importance of unique, relevant content on your website. Quality content not only helps you rank higher in the search engines, it also helps your user find exactly what they are looking for on your website or blog.
Creating unique content is a time consuming, creative process that often leaves people looking for a shortcut or an easier way to do it. Oftentimes people feel that if an article or image is published online, it is free for the taking; that it can then be re-purposed and republished without permission from the original author. Sadly, unique content is often copied and republished without the knowledge of the auth...
Marketing Lessons from Iconic Rock Bands

Few entities can inspire the kind of loyalty rock bands do. Think about performers like the Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, and Phish, to name just a few. Groups like these have entertained generations of audiences and encouraged strong followings among their most devoted fans. Sure, their music plays a large part in building and maintaining a fan base, but so,too, does great marketing.
Bringing the content to the people
Most recording artists want to sell as many records as possible. That's only natural, after all. So they focus on promoting albums and use concerts as a way to advertise th...

Instilling School Spirit at Your Company
Many factors go into the decision about where to attend college. While majors, location, and ranking undoubtedly hold a high place, the experience of other students and the school's reputation also play a crucial role.
Schools must strike a careful balance between providing a rigorous academic environment, while at the same time offering an enjoyable experience that will make students talk bout their school in a positive way to other prospective students.
Satisfied students can be the best brand ambassadors an institution can find. When students love their school, it emanates from everything they do.
  • The students root for the home team during sports match...

Perform a Website Audit
Many website owners take the Ron Popeil approach with "set it and forget it” and while that may work for roasting chickens, it is a terrible web strategy. If it has been awhile since you reviewed your own website, summertime is an ideal time to do it. Read on to see 8 things to look for when you are doing a website audit.
On the horizon: Advertising on Instagram
With a community of 300 million and growing, Instagram is one of the world’s largest social platforms. To date, Instagram has remained fairly advertisement free. When Facebook purchased Instagram back in 2012, they slowly rolled out selected ads from widely known brands, but advertising for small/medium businesses has been unavailable. In a recent new release, Instagram announced that in the coming months it will open up advertising to businesses of all sizes. Citing statistics from 475 measured campaigns, Instagram’s ad recall from sponsored posts was 2.9x higher than Nielsen’s norm for online advertising. With stats like these, online marketers will be flocking to Instagram Ads to see what kind of results they can achieve for...
Keep Your Existing Customers Around by Improving Engagement
If you're like many business professionals, you know that half the battle of growing your business is getting existing customers to stick around. When you provide your customers with outstanding customer service, some incredible things happen:
  • Customers are willing to pay more, just for your service.
  • Customers are more likely to recommend you to others.
  • You end up spending less for each conversion (it costs less to retain customers than find new ones).
  • You build customer loyalty
In our intensely competitive modern market, you can't afford to overlook these benefits.

What analytics reports should I be looking at?
We talk to a lot of clients and prospects about what is working for their business and what is not. When it comes to their online presence, we can fairly objectively evaluate their success level by looking at a few key reports on Google Analytics. If you aren’t currently using an analytics program to evaluate your own website, we would strongly suggest you add some as soon as possible. Google Analytics is free and provides a comprehensive overview of who is looking at your site, how they found your site, what they did once they were on your site and more. While Google isn’t the only game in town, it is one of the largest.
Resizing images for use on the web
We have all visited a website where the images load very slowly one line at a time or we’ve seen horribly scrunched and skewed images being forced into a size they were not meant to be. Using properly sized images on your website not only makes your website look more professional, it makes it load faster which is paramount for visitors looking at your site on a handheld device.  There are a few things we consider when we are resizing images for use on the web; file size, file type, desired dimensions and cropping.
Tips for effective networking
Face to face networking events are often a necessary part of life as a business professional. They let you meet like-minded individuals, make important business connections and get your foot in the door of potential clients.  Here are a few things you can do to make your next networking event a success.
  1. Ask questions – apply the two ears one mouth principal; listen twice as much as you speak. Asking open ended questions, like "Why” or "How”, require more than just a yes or no answer and help you build rapport with your new contact.
  2. Be a connector - instead of focusing only on making your own ...

Google has been rolling out lots of changes to apps, Google Play and the presentation of mobile search engine results all in preparation for a larger algorithm release that is scheduled to be released on or around April 21st.  As we learned from past Google algorithm changes (Penguin and Panda), these updates can greatly impact where your site ranks in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
The update set to be released on April 21st is focused on providing a better search experience for mobile users. To accomplish this, Google will be "expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal.” So what does that mean to business owners? If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, your mobile ...
